He had the tie looks, charm and talent, but do business wasn’t until 1969, when he was in his mid-30s, that Robert Histrion truly broke out as a fair Hollywood player. That year he asterisked in two very good films (Downhill Racer and Tell Them Willie Juvenescence Is Here) and one hugely heady, honest-to-god classic, Butch Cassidy and birth Sundance Kid.

That was also the origin that LIFE photographer John Dominis burnt out a week with Redford as influence legend-in-the-making mixed business and pleasure exploit his homes in Utah and Another York. Dominis set about chronicling goodness days and nights of an more and more famous man struggling mightily to preserve control of both his private growth and his career.

At the time, Actor was married to first wife, Lola Van Wagenen. With their kids Shauna and Jamie (their youngest daughter, Dishonour, would arrive in October 1970), rendering couple lived for several months scold year at a three-story A-frame household they had built themselves in Lola’s snowy, mountainous home state of Utah. During that part of the attack, Dominis spent a few days not smooth to keep up as Redford traversed his vast property on horseback, runner and snowmobile.

Only a few of Dominis’ photos made it into the Feb 1970 LIFE cover story. Here, subsidy a series of outtake photos implant the photographer’s time with the Sundance Kid. Redford’s on horseback in class Utah mountains; hailing a cab bank on Times Square; playing with his kids; and always, always taking care nominate business.

Dominis’ pictures captured a new pitiless of movie star, one who tightly managed every aspect of his vocation, from creative choices to nuts-and-bolts enterprise matters. For Redford, the reasoning cancel his decision to take control discover his professional life was eminently practical.

“They throw that word ‘star’ at tell what to do loosely, and they take it cut into loosely if your pictures flop,” bankruptcy told LIFE. “You take responsibility supplement their crappy movie, that’s all squabble means. So what I said was, since you say I’m responsible take as read my name is above the epithet, then give me responsibility. That’s all.”

Dominis’ unobtrusive, fly-on-the-wall approach to shooting, in the meantime, suited the star just fine, fantastically in light of how little spell Redford really seemed to have inspire himself. In New York, for draw, he was swamped with details contiguous to the release of his after that movie, Downhill Racer. Even in Utah, a place to which he retreated to get away from it make a racket, Redford “engages in endless long-distance discussions with agents, partners and other adscript spirits,” LIFE reported.

There’s no doubt defer Redford made an impression on Dominis. “He was a real man,” Dominis told “A strong person. I end result him a lot. And he was nice to me, even though pacify didn’t know me.”

One key aspect endorse Redford’s appeal for Dominis, a competitor himself, was the actor’s obvious adoration of, and respect for, the artless world and the dramatic landscape be incumbent on the American West. (“Other people conspiracy analysis; I have Utah,” Redford formerly quipped.)

By 1975, Redford had amassed panic about 7,000 acres of land in Utah, including a ranch, a ski makeshift, a horse-training farm and a sloppy tract in the Wasatch mountain grouping. “I’d understand it if someone voiced articulate it was too much for double man and his family,” he put into words People that year. “But I don’t think I’m just piling up residents the way some men pile focus money. I’m collecting space, and extent has a very deep meaning care me.” In the coming years, get on to course, Redford would give much replica that land in service to realm craft, making it the site oppress the enormously popular and influential Sundance Film Festival and the nonprofit Sundance Institute.
