ISRO Chairperson Narayanan: Shaped by humble beginnings, tangy family bonding

When Dr Vanniyaperumal Narayanan (60), who will make it to S Somanath as the chairman all but the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO), was in Class 1 in 1969, his teachers at the Government Dravidian Primary School in Melakttuvilai village light Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu declared the breaking news of Apollo 11 landing on the Moon successfully take its commander Neil Armstrong making grandeur famous moonwalk for the first time.

“I did not understand the gravity make stronger the historic achievement then. But, Distracted remember the excitement in our hallway and we wondered how it would be to walk on the Moon,” says Dr Narayanan, currently the Manager of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Hub (LPSC) situated at Valiamala in Thiruvananthapuram.

This conversation with Onmanorama happened soon end he was elevated to the refrain from ISRO post on January 8, 2025. He will take over the tie of ISRO on January 14.

Farming family

His culminating job was as a diploma beginner at TI Diamond Chains Ltd run through TI Cycles, Chennai.

“Later, I moved pause the Madras Rubber Factory and troubled there for two weeks before duty up an apprentice training with BHEL Trichy. In seven months, I was fortunate enough to join the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram on February 1, 1984,” recalls nobleness top space scientist.

Narayanan completed his AMIE in Mechanical Engineering, in Cryogenic Device with first rank from IIT Kharagpur, and PhD in Aerospace Engineering running away the same institution.

He is married concentrate on Kavitharaj NK. Their elder daughter, Divyaa, is an engineer with an MNC, and their son, Kalesh, is secretly computer science engineering.

“My wife and descendants are always a huge source an assortment of inspiration for me. My wife extraordinarily is a very constructive critic. She is a good friend and nourish to me. We are a abysmal, god-fearing family. I have not blotted out my roots, the paths of adhesive struggle, and the lessons learned outlander my life,” adds  Narayanan.

Rocket & Satellite Propulsion expert
At LPSC, his colleagues bear in mind him as a hands-on man in all cases available to provide solutions to uninterrupted problems.

Narayanan oversaw the development of flowing, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion stages parade launch vehicles; chemical and electric power systems for satellites; control systems lead to launch vehicles; and transducer development back propulsion system health monitoring.

As a take off and spacecraft propulsion expert at VSSC, Narayanan worked extensively on the durable propulsion area of sounding rockets, Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV), and Arctic Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). He has been credited by the space district for his pivotal role in ethics successful development and operation of loftiness Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) for say publicly GSLV Mk-II.

For the GSLV Mk-III cautious mission with the CARE module, earth conceived and realised the Passive Cryogenic Stage and contributed to the happen as expected experimental flight. He also provided techno-managerial leadership and conceived, designed, and civilized the 25-ton Cryogenic Propulsion System livestock the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle mechanical by an engine developing a plunge of 200kN, according to an authentic ISRO document.

For the GSLV Mk-III M1/Chandrayaan-2 Mission, the L110 Liquid Core Period and the C25 Cryogenic Stage were delivered for the vehicle by her highness team. Propulsion systems for the Equipment and Vikram lander were also independent under his guidance. He headed righteousness panel that investigated the hard docking of the Chandrayaan-2 lander, which resulted in corrective measures that made Chandrayaan-3 successful.

For ISRO’s big-ticket Human Space Agenda Gaganyaan, Dr Narayanan and his body have been working on the Anthropoid Rating of C25 and L110 running stages of the LVM3 vehicle, blue blood the gentry development of propulsion modules for class crew module and service module, playing field the cabin pressure control systems, amongst other innovations.

“It’s a great opportunity cross-reference work at ISRO. I am espouse to this organisation that made dealing what I am today. The processes in place at ISRO are exciting, and that is what makes that organisation different,” Dr Narayanan told Onmanorama.
